Bearing in mind the price and the HP brand, not bad December 1, 2008 Wessex Man 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First the price is remarkable with the latest discount and it does have the HP brand. It comes with a decent keyboard and mouse - but: - It has really cheap and nasty documentation. Very little is provided on the new Vista Premium or the features of the PC - It has no USB ports on my machine at the front (Other suppliers show a picture with 2 ports at the front). So I bought a powered USB hub from Amazon to resolve that problem - it does have 4 USB ports at the back - It has a HP Pocket Media Drive Bay to insert a Pocket Media Drive but buy your own. For some strange reason the system has allocated drive letters F,G,H,I for Removable disks which I think are to do with the Pocket Media Drive - but there are no explanations _ It has Vista Premium which is a pain as my other computer is a XP machine and it took a long time to get the Home Network running. Of course you have to get all the new drivers and re-load software which will test how good you are at keeping licence keys etc!
However on the plus side it does have - HP Lightscribe DVD/CD drive - It works well with the HomePlug networking system (where you use the electrical cabling in your house as LAN cabling and do not have to worry about wireless reception) - It does boot quickly - It performs well but I am not a gamer and do not put excessive demands on the machine - It has the HP advisory service that monitors the performance of your PC - Works perfectly with my old 17" screen - I could connect my old HP LaserJet 5P using a USB port after buying a suitable product for about 7 from Amazon. There is no parallel port on the PC which is not surprising. - The fan is not whisper quiet, but is not that noisy either
I have had the PC for a couple of weeks now, and do not regret buying it. Look at the price, look at the brand and give some serious consideration to buying this as a no-frills home PC.
Product not as described... November 11, 2008 Ian Thompson 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This PC does NOT include the 160GB Pocket Media Drive - despite all the fancy leaflets and website information that HP have produced. I've just spent two hours on the phone to HP - passed around various departments until someone finally admitted that this is an error made by HP, that Marketing are aware but that they haven't got round to correcting the mistake since the product line was launched few months ago. The list includes the HP Customer Pre-Order advice line, who were certain that the PMD was bundled, because they read the same spec lists as are on the website, and are as much in the dark about this error as the rest of us.
As such it's not sold as described - beware - you can get the a6600 series for less, but the only one that HP will give any help with (as they sell it directly) is the a6632 - which also doesn't include the PMD, but at least that's how the paperwork and spec lists it...
And, as only resellers carry this model, HP will not honour their mistake by providing the PMD - the only option is to return for a full refund, which means the user and reseller are left out of pocket for HP's mistake.
Apart from that, the unit is smart, but the power button is mounted on the top edge of the front facia - tricky for under-desk installation!
