5 out of 5 stars JUST FANTASTIC   December 26, 2008

Treated myself just before Christmas, arrived in 12 hours. Plugged it in switched it on. Wireless connection found straight away. In fact it found 6 computers including my own to connect to, so range is absolutely no problem. Of course could only connect to my own with code. Very simple. Uninstalled McAfee and Windows trial, installed free AVG and free office. Got a Logitech VX Nono mouse, excellent. As no CD/DVD drive included will have to get one to install any more programs which is a bit of a bind as they are not cheap. Would recommend whole heartedly. Have no experience of Linux so I am glad I plumped for Windows XP version. So far it does everything a desk top does and just as quickly.

Bought this a few weeks ago mainly for browsing the net.
This is a fantastic little product but it is what it is a portable internet browser plus.
If you load it with applications , music , photos etc it will slow down.
Store music, photos on SD cards and keep the hard drive free and you will have no problems.
Don't need to be tied into buying software.
I uninstalled the McAfee and replaced with AVG and also uninstalled Microsoft Office demo.
Microsoft works is installed and has word incorporated which does me nicely.
My laptop kept losing the internet if i left it for a couple of minutes , this is a power saving feature and can be resolved by START, CONTROL PANEL switch to classic view, SYSTEM, HARDWARE, DEVICE MANAGER, NETWORK ADAPTERS clik on the Atheros adapter and choose ADVANCED. In the list choose power save mode and switch to off.
The overall finish is superb and very shiny this unfortunately picks up fingerprints.
I bought a leather case.
The screen also looks great and again is very shiny which can cause glare.
I didn't like the touch pad but i don't like them on any laptop anyway.
I bought the logitech nano mouse with micro reciever which barely sticks out of the side and can be left in place. I can thoroughly recommend it.
I am delighted with this purchase and also Amazons amazing service.

3 out of 5 stars Acer NOT Aspire One   December 6, 2008

Hi Just incase you are thinking of buying a Linux version??

I wrote a review a little while ago with some issues about the AA1, and if I could have turned the clock back I think and would have, should have taken a second look. And to be quite frank I thought Linux was Linux as per my Eeepc 701 by Asus. But how wrong I was, Asus's version of Linux is so user friendly unlike the AA1, if you need to do basic options like connect to your XP machines / networks / network drives. This was so easy with the Asus unlike the AA1. So this is what I commented on to another user (see below)

I purchased my Acer Aspire One 150 AW a couple of months ago, and i have to agree and as per my review, the Linux based installed software is utterly useless if you need to venture out side the Acer experience. I thought of loading Ubuntu, and even XP, but spending many hours on different forums there seemed to be many issues of loading drivers etc for either options. So I have called it a day and just purchased a new Samsung NC10 with XP loaded, and passed on my AA1 to my daughter. Its a shame that Acer did not do their home work like Asus with Linux based machines which i previously owned and that Linux software was well good and user friendly.

Acer you need to go back to the drawing board and place a decent Linux version on their machines, and then in my view it would have been a little cracker.

Cheers

5 out of 5 stars No need to lose a fast start under XP   November 28, 2008

I tried the Linux version in a shop, and the to-die for looks and spec were matched with a very rapid start, but my fear of the new and my general laziness persuaded me to go with the XP version, although with qualms about losing the 15-second start. Since finding out I could have a Hibernate option on XP by holding down shift when choosing how to shut down, I've been able to ensure fast starts after all. The machine is great, although I'd prefer the bigger battery they get in the US, and the 160Gb version they've started to sell in the UK.

I bought this about 3 weeks ago and having been used to using larger laptops I was really impressed.

It easily fits in my bag, boots up fairly quick on xp.

However i thought I'd try and squeeze a little more performance out of it. I pgraded to 1.5 Gb of RAM and has Windows XP Professional fully installed, I also replaced the troublesome Atheros wireless card with an Intel 3945ABG wireless which works perfectly and a has a greater range than the original item.

Im not much of a techie but the upgrades were very easy to do. Longer lasting battery upradges are also available off certain well known aution sites should you want longers than 3 hrs battery life. With my upgrades battery has gone down to 2 hrs so il be doing that.

I actually prefer this to my desktop because i can use it in bed, theres a new 160gb and 200gb version out in the new year but 120bg is more than enough.

I thing i would suggest is to buy a case and screen protector, its fairly sturdy but being so small your gonna want to protect it.
