The chances of being stuck in a cave, in the dark, with vampire bats, are, thankfully, small. However, our motto is: preparation is everything. So our advice: do not leave home without the Shake Torch in your glove box or travel bag. And the reason? Simple: You shake the Shake Torch for approximately 45 seconds. And it gives you light for approximately 5 minutes. No batteries needed. Ah yes, eco-friendly and lasts forever. Very handy indeed. Now for the science: the Shake Torch has a large magnet inside it. This sits within a conducting coil. As the torch is shaken, the magnet moves back and forth generating an electrical current. This current is then transferred to a holding cell which retains it and enables you to use the torch even if it has not been shaken for some time. You can even see the workings of the torch for yourself because it is made from semi-translucent shock resistant plastic. But that's not all. The Shake Torch uses an LED light rather than a bulb. LED light is both ultra-efficient and everlasting. Which means, no spare bulbs needed either. Ingenious, wouldn't you agree?

I think this is quite a cool looking object, but then I like things where you can see the inner workings. Seems quite well made, but at this price all it needs to do is outlast a set of batteries to be a bargain.

When this torch arrived I was surprised at how large it is. Think Cucumber! It feels like a big lump of plastic that is mostly full of air, which it is. Turning the torch on lights a single LED that is ok, and would be pretty impressive if this were a keyring torch, but it is not, and it looks disappointing considering the size of the thing. I think I am going to put this one in the car as it does not weigh much, and it is too big and ugly to keep in the house.
My advice is to buy a traditional wind-up torch they are much smaller and brighter.

My brother was given this torch for xmas and showed me the other day, and I was very impressed. It gives a very good bright light, and looks
very interesing and rather stylish, even more so as the body is transparent and the mechanism is visible inside(good for scienctific explanations, Mums and Dads,Uncles and Aunties etc.).
Be aware that the whole body of the torch lights up as well, which is also very stylish, but maybe not good for clandestine night work.
And the price, well, about the same as a good four-pack!
